We believe students learn best when they feel known, supported, and appropriately challenged.

Challenge at PS1 means asking thoughtful questions, solving complex problems, communicating ideas clearly, taking intellectual risks, and persisting through difficulty. As children grow they are invited to think more critically, take on greater responsibility, and engage with increasingly complex ideas. Each stage builds on the last.

Youngers

Kindergarten and first grade

The early years are filled with discovery, and they are also a time of significant intellectual growth. Youngers build strong foundations in literacy and mathematics while learning how to think independently.

What it can look like

  • Explaining mathematical thinking in more than one way
  • Writing increasingly detailed stories and informational pieces
  • Conducting investigations and sharing discoveries
  • Asking questions, making predictions, and testing ideas
  • Reflecting on mistakes and using feedback to improve

Through Contexts for Learning Mathematics, students meet a problem grounded in a familiar story and are challenged to develop, represent, and explain their own strategies rather than follow a procedure. In science they might investigate how the strength or direction of a push changes an object’s motion.

Bridge

Second grade

Bridge students take greater ownership of their learning as they move into more complex academic work, strengthening foundations while expanding their ability to analyze and connect.

What it can look like

  • Applying mathematical strategies to new situations
  • Writing with greater organization, detail, and purpose
  • Gathering research from multiple sources
  • Collaborating with peers on long-term projects
  • Revising work based on feedback

In math, students solve a problem that can be approached several ways, compare strategies with classmates, and explain why a particular approach works. In science they test and compare materials to decide which properties best solve a problem.

Middles

Third and fourth grade

In Middles, academic challenge expands beyond finding answers to understanding how and why things work. Students support ideas with evidence and examine multiple perspectives.

What it can look like

  • Conducting research projects and presenting findings
  • Writing across genres for different audiences
  • Defending mathematical reasoning and problem-solving strategies
  • Discussion that requires listening, questioning, and evidence
  • Managing longer assignments and collaborative projects

Students might analyze fossil evidence to draw conclusions about past environments, develop models to explain how waves behave, or compare possible solutions to an environmental problem.

Olders

Fifth and sixth grade

Olders lead seminar discussions, analyze literature, defend mathematical reasoning, conduct research, and present their thinking to authentic audiences, while mentoring the younger children in the school.

What it can look like

  • Leading seminar discussions and moderating disagreement
  • Analyzing literature and defending an interpretation
  • Independent research presented to real audiences
  • Roughly an hour of homework a night, organized in Google Classroom
  • Planning school events and speaking at Circle Time

By sixth grade, students have had years of increasing leadership, intellectual independence, and self-advocacy. They leave not only prepared academically but with a clear understanding of how they learn best.
