Events and traditions
PS1 believes in the impact of tradition on young children, so the calendar is full on purpose.
The weekly rhythm
Three things happen often enough that children can count on them.
Every Friday
The whole school gathers to sing, dance, show work from across the clusters, and hear guest speakers and performers. Speaking at Circle Time is real public-speaking practice.
Twice a month
Families work challenge problems together before school. Grown-ups are invited to sit alongside their mathematicians.
Monthly
The community gathers in the library over breakfast to hear a VIP reader share a favorite story. Each class sponsors one through the year.
Through the year
Some new, many evolved over time. Families look forward to them year after year.
August
New students explore classrooms, meet teachers, and practice the school-day routine before the year starts.
September
A welcoming coffee for parents on the first morning, followed by New Parent Orientation.
November
A themed morning on campus, 10:00am to 2:00pm, open to prospective families as well as current ones.
Through the year
Two nights for grades two and up, and an extended day trip for K-1.
December
One of the school's oldest traditions.
Spring
An art walk, classroom visits, and a picnic under the live oak.
Spring
The annual performances. This year students are staging James and the Giant Peach and Madagascar.
Spring
Run by the Parents Guild, and the largest community event of the year.
June
The sixth grade rite of passage, and the moment the whole school marks the end of a year.
