Different perspectives spark higher-level thinking, and that gives our learners the skills to contribute confidently to their communities. Throughout the school's history, pluralism has been lived and described through our values rather than kept as a separate program.
We celebrate curiosity and empathy in work and play. The program engages students' personal experiences and interests so they connect meaningfully with the curriculum. That nurtures cultural competency, critical thinking, collaboration with kindness, and consensus building. We find joy in continuously learning about and from one another.
Self-awareness sits at the heart of social and emotional learning here. Cultural competency work begins with students learning about themselves and expressing their truths to others. That interpersonal work prepares them to bring the same understanding to academic exploration, and to recognize how perspectives and values are layered into every investigation.
Individual identities unite and enrich us. Students are scaffolded through the curriculum to compare and contrast cultures and backgrounds with their own, so they can explore, understand, and responsibly engage with the world around them. Everyone carries their own cultural frame of interpretation, and awareness of that predisposition strengthens critical thinking.
As students expand their comfort zones, from a small-group project to their classroom, the school, the neighborhood, and eventually the wider world, each learns how and why to make positive change at every level.
Our work with Private School Village and AXIS brings community-wide workshops, facilitated conversations, and parent education focused on equity, identity, and belonging. SoCal POCIS and the Independent School Alliance connect our faculty and families to a wider network doing the same work.
