Six specialists, most weeks in half-class groups, planning alongside the classroom teachers so the learning connects.

All PS1 students attend classes with our specialist teachers throughout the week, often in half-class groups to allow for more individual instruction. The six specialists frequently plan with classroom teachers, which is how projects end up spanning several subjects at once.

A PS1 The Studio class in session

The Studio

An innovative makerspace where students engage in hands-on, problem-based learning. Students learn to safely use woodworking equipment, electronics, laser cutting, and 3D printing to bring their ideas to life.

The Studio emphasizes STEAM learning as students identify problems, test ideas, revise prototypes, incorporate feedback, and explain the reasoning behind their design decisions. Design thinking has been central to PS1 since 1971: it treats learning as a process, from early research through reflection and presentation, rather than only a final product.

A PS1 Art class in session

Art

The arts are woven into every subject, often inspired by the natural world. Geometry comes to life through architectural models, scientific observations take shape as ink drawings or topographical clay maps, and writing is frequently paired with illustration.

In the dedicated art studio students work across pen, paint, pastels, ceramics, and tile mosaics, exploring color, line, form, and perspective. Sustainability is central, and many projects use recycled and sustainably sourced materials.

A PS1 Spanish class in session

Spanish

The Spanish program is designed to inspire lifelong language learners by building curiosity about language, culture, and communication. It grows alongside each child from kindergarten through sixth grade.

Beyond Spanish class, students meet the language throughout the school day, at school-wide events, and in literature across the curriculum. Spanish is a living language in this community, spoken by students, staff, and families.

A PS1 Music class in session

Music

Students learn to read, write, and perform music from a wide range of cultures and historical periods using Orff, percussion, wind, and tonal instruments. Each week brings singing, theory, appreciation, and instrument skills.

Students share their learning at assemblies, community events, and the annual Music, Movement, and Drama performances. This year they are performing James and the Giant Peach and Madagascar. Instrumental instruction is available before school through our partnership with Sounds Like LA.

A PS1 Physical education class in session

Physical education

A holistic approach to physical skills, confidence, and social connection. Students play basketball, soccer, lacrosse, Ultimate Frisbee, flag football, and volleyball, and take on yoga, dance, circus arts, and ropes courses.

PE meets each child where they are, supporting individual growth while encouraging teamwork. Through games and team sports students practice sportsmanship, fair play, and perseverance. Most of all it is joyful.

A PS1 Library class in session

Library

The Library is the literal heart of PS1, open before, during, and after the school day to students, faculty, and families.

Its carefully curated collection supports classroom learning while inviting leisure reading and exploration. Book Breakfasts bring the whole community in once a month to hear a VIP reader share a favorite story.
