Nicolina Karlsson-Horelick
Art Specialist
Nicolina is entering her twenty-second year as the Art Teacher at PS1 and her thirtieth year of teaching overall. Her passion for art and children began at an early age while inspired by both her parents' careers in Sweden: her mother a ceramicist and her father a crafts teacher. In fact, this love for art began so early that Nicolina can't remember not doing art. She studied fine art and psychology for four years at some of Sweden's finest schools including the De La Gardie Hogskolan and St Sigfrid's Folkhogskola. While in Sweden, she also worked for four years with children with special needs using art as a major healing and communication tool. In her twenties, Nicolina made an exciting decision to continue to study fine art and psychology in the United States. She moved to California in 1992 and fell in love with the climate, nature, and the people. She has a B.F.A. in Fine Arts from UCLA where she studied under many fine contemporary artists. She's been an after-school enrichment Art Teacher and Assistant Kindergarten Teacher. In addition to her schoolwork, she enjoys spending quality time with her two children, Meleja who is eighteen and Audunn, who is sixteen. She has a passion for nature, animals, and loves to travel to new places. "My mission is sharing my passion for art, creating together, and building confidence to get all of you excited about it, too!"
